Solo + Chamber Works

"Breath" was written for a mixed chamber group comprised of SATB, flute, horn, 2 violin, viola, cello, and percussion. The piece explores the Hebrew name for God, Yahweh, and the concept that this name imitates the motion of a breath. 

With heavy improvisation influence, this performative piece illustrates a conversation between two individuals. Their voices are personified through their instruments as they explore a conversation through music. With simple musical lines, "The Complexities of Conversation" opens up the stage for performers to dive into a fun space offering ample opportunity for improv alongside space to act out the piece.

"From Whispers Within" served as an attempt to push myself out of the comfort zones I found stuck in at the time. This programmatic piece utilizes shifting sections to illustrate the battle of good and evil within a character. As I do with many of my chamber pieces, I wanted the sound to be expansive and cinematic despite it's small instrumentation which consists of Bb clarinet, horn, violin, cello, and double bass.

Originally written in 2021 for fixed media, Madelynn accredits "Blue" as her first true composition. During her final year of her undergraduate degree she decided to revise the piece for live performance. The composition explores the mixed feelings one navigates during pivotal moments of change and moving on in one's life.
